To mark the International Day of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held every year on 17 October, Historic Jeddah is drawing attention to its living heritage: the traditional crafts, arts and social customs that generations have passed on and that have shaped the district's identity.
That heritage spans oral traditions and expressions, performing arts, social practices, rituals and celebrations, knowledge relating to nature and the universe, and skills tied to traditional craftsmanship, practices that keep renewing themselves in community life.
This diversity reflects Historic Jeddah's role over the centuries as a meeting point of cultures, which has enriched its social and cultural legacy and established it as a site of living heritage.
The occasion builds on the Ministry of Culture's Historic Jeddah revival project, which seeks to protect both tangible and intangible heritage and position the district as a centre of culture and creativity and a world heritage destination, in line with the National Culture Strategy and Saudi Vision 2030.
