Visitors to Historic Jeddah can follow each step of making a handmade product at Zawiya 97, from preparing and shaping raw materials to the final details, through activities that present the practical skills behind traditional crafts and arts.
Located close to Nassif House, the space covers a variety of handwork, among them shaping natural materials, decorating wood, making soap and perfume and creating mosaics, alongside pieces that combine traditional materials with contemporary design.
The activities show how material, tool and skill come together: every item requires knowledge of its materials, careful handling and a set sequence of production steps, which gives handmade work its individual character.
Live demonstrations and practical workshops explain the tools and the methods of shaping and decorating, and let visitors try skills that artisans once passed on through observation and direct practice. The organisers see this as a way of preserving craft knowledge as part of intangible cultural heritage and encouraging interest in handmade products.
