To mark World Arabic Novel Day, the Literature Professional Association, through its ambassadors in Rafha Governorate, held a cultural evening on Monday titled "What Remains of the Novel". Writer Jamal Al-Humaid was the speaker, poet and writer Saad Al-Thabiti moderated, and a number of people interested in culture and literature attended.
The discussion traced the history of the novel and the stages of its development, what distinguishes Arabic narrative fiction, and the leading names and works in the field. It also looked at how the art form is changing amid global shifts and the rapid advance of artificial intelligence, and stressed the importance of thoughtful reading of serious novels.
Members of the audience joined the debate with comments and questions on the present state and future of the novel and its role in expressing changes in people and society.
The association said the evening is part of its efforts to energise literary life in Rafha, widen participation in cultural events and strengthen the place of literature in the community, in line with Saudi Vision 2030 goals of supporting culture and the arts.
