The "butcher scorpion," recognizable by its large pincers and sturdy body, has been documented in the Northern Borders Region, adding to evidence of the varied wildlife that has adapted to the area's vast deserts and climate.
The species lives in arid and semi-arid environments and copes with them by sheltering in burrows it digs in the ground.
Field records of such species help identify wildlife and habitats in northern Saudi Arabia. The region's plains, valleys, ravines and sandy, gravelly and rocky ground provide many different habitats, and monitoring improves understanding of which species are present and how they live.
Adnan Khalifa, a member of Aman Environmental Association who tracks and documents wildlife, stressed the need to protect natural habitats and not harm animals or disturb their homes, given their role in the ecosystem. He advised people who come across scorpions not to touch or try to catch them and to stay away from their burrows.
