The food safety laboratory of Asir Region Municipality carried out more than 16,000 laboratory analyses and tests on foodstuffs during August, a daily average of about 519, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). The work forms part of efforts to monitor food safety and verify that products on sale are of good quality and fit for human consumption.
The laboratory also carried out 15 field visits to seasonal events to support on-site inspections and check compliance with food safety requirements, while introducing the technical and analytical services it offers.
During the same period, inspections led to the seizure and destruction of 100 kilograms of various foods that were unfit for human consumption. The main violations recorded were products of unknown source or origin, unclear expiry information, signs of spoilage and mould, and visible damage to food items.
For shoppers in Asir, the findings are a reminder to check expiry dates and the source of food products before buying.
