King Saud University has been granted a new US patent for a Tri-Leaflet Mechanical Heart Valve, invented by Dr. Rakan bin Ibrahim Nazer, Professor of Cardiac Sciences in the Department of Cardiac Sciences at the university's College of Medicine.
The design uses three moving leaflets linked to a central mechanism and a peripheral ring. Together they allow the leaflets to open and close in a coordinated way, regulating blood flow and limiting backflow.
The invention offers a new concept in mechanical heart valve design, aiming to improve how the leaflets move and how blood flows through the valve compared with conventional designs.
The patent adds to the university's record in medical innovation and supports the development of mechanical heart valve technologies.
