To mark International Literacy Day, observed every year on September 8, the General Administration of Education in Makkah Region is highlighting the contribution of adult education to sustainable development.

Schools throughout the region are holding activities that promote lifelong learning, such as showcases of learners' success, discussions on life skills, vocabulary-building initiatives and competitions.

The region has 32 continuing education schools with 133 teachers and 28 administrators, as well as nine community centers devoted to empowering adults.
